Of all his stagings, Ancient Trilogy has a special place. The Trojan is the most eloquent fragment of this masterpiece, composed in collaboration with Liz Swados almost 40 years ago.
Trojan show is dedicated to the memory of Mrs. Ellen Stewart, founder of the New York theater “La Mama”, where it was originally created.
Without courage, determination and support them, this project would not have existed and would obviously not be enough to circulate worldwide, now at the Romanian National Opera Iasi.
The end of the Trojan War. Participants, led by Queen Hecuba evokes the spirit of Troy. Trojan women are trapped Greek soldiers. Princess Cassandra, priestess of Apollo, in a prophetic trance, warns of further losses and future sacrifices. Andromache, widow of Hector (dead and he, like all heroes Trojans) protects her son Astyanax, the only surviving male Trojan. He is the last hope of the drifts, who rush to crown him as king, but Greeks take hostage to kill him. Elena appears, which caused the war when he was abducted by the Trojan Paris. It’s made by Menelaus, husband betrayed and humiliated. The two sides, united in hatred, threw on her. Hecuba a curse. The second part of the show has a more lyrical, is a meditation on the tumultuous events that have occurred. The child-king is buried the ghost of Achiles comes to avenge the death and Poluxena, a young vestal He falls victim. The ships are prepared for the trip to Greece, the women say goodbye each other. They will be taken into exile. Although they were stripped of everything, something has remained, something that can not be captured: the force of spirit. A civilization ended. Trojan Women will be treated as a new culture. But this spiritual force will be the flame that will create new civilization. Troy … Greece … then Rome, conveyed the spirit of each culture on.

Although originally premiered 40 years ago in a theater – La Mama in New York, led by the famous and unique Ellen Stewart – work have a shape and structure operations epic. Composer American Liz Swados, drawing inspiration from various musical themes ethnographic belonging to certain cultures they studied in her travels, composed an opera in which text and music were designed together: ancient Greek of Euripides (shown in original) deal with the disastrous effects of the Greek invasion of Troy and the tragic consequences of the destruction of a civilization. These events were not explored as a setup muzeisitică but a visceral experience that we can touch any of us at any time in history.
A lot of vocal training based on a study of other cultures.. Expression through music of various myths tragic either African or Asian or closer to us, the Balkans, had all the themes and melodies echo in the soul universal. As work? For example, in rehearsal I gave the interpreters to listen to a collection of dirges from Maramures. The actors tried to reproduce sound at first by mechanical repetition, and discovering inner sound vibration mechanism, so that the emission to become organic. The libretto has evolved naturally without thinking about the phraseology, but the key situations of the play and there I found an appropriate expression to express them freely in rhythm. Collage final text did not follow all Euripides, but by chaining key actions and situations, precisely orchestrated, atmosphere and feeling of the song have been recreated. And international tours and a long career on the New York scene, Trojan (one of three parties in the Greek Trilogy) were staged at the National Theatre in Bucharest immediately after the revolution. IMPAC on generations that followed was stronger. For that,Beatrice Rancea who play and dance in the show, he proposed to restore in Iasi this experiment universal – opera theater.
For all the singers and for the viewers want it will remain unique opportunity, demonstrating through Greek tragedy and force the pace of its universal message. Although at the opposite pole grace serene and happy ”Indies Galante”, in contrast Trojan expressed through the painful experience of captivity and exile contrast Trojan women desire to live free and fulfilled. ”
